Hump Day Strategy for Theme Park Crowds
With its beautiful weather and days free from school, Spring Break is known to draw theme park crowds. The best strategy in dealing with lines is to be patient and have fun. But we also did a little digging and have some other hot tips to help you plan your visit more efficiently.
Our best advice? Go wild for Wednesdays.
Many travelers arrive in Orlando on Sundays and spend their Monday and Tuesday at theme parks. By the time Wednesday rolls around, they’re ready to take a break, which is when you can swoop in.
Our research shows Wednesdays are typically quiet(er) days at Universal Orlando Resort™ Parks & Attractions, and it’s a great pick for shorter lines at Walt Disney World® Resort’s four main parks, too, before local passholders start flooding the queues.
Think Early Bird & Golden Hour for Universal Orlando Resort™ Parks & Attractions
Orlando spring breaks are best enjoyed to the fullest, which means getting up and getting at it. Our recommended strategy is to arrive at the park the moment it opens (via the complimentary Hotel Landy shuttle) to ride showstoppers like the Jurassic World VelociCoaster before the day heats up and the crowds pick up.
Then, you can always take a timeout by the Hotel Landy pool to reset and recharge before returning from 7 pm to close. We’ve found that many families wrap up their day around dinner time, which means the last few hours can be less hectic.
As a bonus, you’ll then be in a prime position to enjoy the after-dark energy of Universal CityWalk™ for live music and late-night bites.
Remember that hours are subject to change, but typically follow this schedule in March:
- Universal Studios Florida™: Closes at 9:00 PM.
- Universal Islands of Adventure™: Closes at 7:00 PM.
- Universal Epic Universe: Closes at 9:00 PM.
- Universal Volcano Bay™: Closes at 5:00 PM.
- Universal CityWalk™: Remains open until 12:00 AM or 1:00 AM, depending on the venue.

What if it Rains During Your Spring Break Trip?
On a warm Orlando day, it doesn’t really matter if it rains on your parade, but just in case you need a getaway, you can find plenty of fun indoors. Here are some of the top options:
- ICON Park Entertainment Complex includes the Sea Life Orlando Aquarium, Museum of Illusions, and Madame Tussauds Orlando.
- The majority of rides found at Universal Studios Florida™ are indoors. That includes Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts™, Revenge of the Mummy™, and TRANSFORMERS™: The Ride-3D. We also recommend The Bourne Stuntacular. It’s a 20-30 minute indoor show that sees you “follow Jason Bourne as he outruns sinister characters hoping to bring him in. He dangles from a helicopter in Dubai.”
